Builder Uses VR to Show Kitchen Design Options

Toll Brothers Inc., a luxury-home builder, is piloting a new tool in a few select markets that allows buyers to use virtual reality to better envision design selections in their new home’s kitchen. They can then easily swap out countertops or cabinet colors and then view the changes in virtual reality. Kitchen 360 offers a 3-D view and floor plan visualizer so that buyers can take a realistic tour through their new kitchen. “When I used the new VR tool, I felt like I was standing in my new kitchen,” says Jillian Talbot, who is building a home in Toll Brothers’ The Hills in Parker, Colo. “It really helps to see how your choice will look so you know what you’re getting before it’s built.” Toll Brothers is partnering with Marxent, a maker of augmented reality and virtual reality technology. Customers can explore floor plans and then design their kitchens using the 3-D product, swapping out flooring, countertops, finishes, paint colors, appliances, and more. “Until now, the personalization process of buying a new home posed a challenge for home buyers to visualize their combination of selected materials using small material samples,” says Mark Bailey, division president of Toll Brothers Colorado Division. “The Kitchen 360 experience enhances a home buyer’s ability to visualize their space with a level of quality that has never been available before. Using this VR technology in combination with the look and feel of those material samples, the buyer has a more complete idea of their vision. They get the chance to actually step inside the space they’ve created, and preview how that space will work for their everyday lives.” To view Kitchen 360 Experience, visit TollBrothers.com/Kitchen360.
