REALTOR®-supported candidates across the country at the federal, state, and local levels scored wins that promise to benefit the real estate industry’s goals of strong communities and healthy residential and commercial property markets.
The National Association of REALTORS® supported hundreds of local, state, and federal candidates, selecting real estate champions regardless of party affiliation. Among some of these wins yesterday in Congress: Andy Barr (R) of the 6th district of Kentucky, Joyce Beatty (D) of the 3rd district of Ohio, Sean Duffy (R) of the 7th district of Wisconsin, and Pete Aguilar (D) of the 31st district of California.
In key state and local races, Larry Hogan (R)—a long-time real estate professional—was reelected governor of Maryland, Sam Yingling (D) was reelected to the Illinois House of Representatives, Sydney Harrison (D) was elected to the Prince George’s County Council District in Maryland, and Dale Washburn (R)—another real estate veteran—was elected for the first time to the Georgia state assembly.
“I’m looking forward to serving the people in my district,” Washburn said last night. “I’ve been a REALTOR® for 43 years and I’m deeply grateful for everything the REALTOR® association did for me: contributions, an independent expenditure, and help from a lot of REALTORS® around the state.”
In all, the association supported more than 250 candidates in state and local races and more than 60 in federal races through REALTOR® Party independent expenditure or opportunity race programs. Almost 60 candidates this election were REALTORS®.
REALTORS® also supported dozens of issue campaigns, including several transfer tax and rent control initiatives in California, several transportation-related issues in Texas, and a transportation-related bond initiative in Colorado.
Individual members of NAR also made a sizable impact by
voting early in massive numbers and by simply getting out to the polls on Election Day. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way our nation’s REALTORS® stepped up and exercised their right as Americans to vote for our elected leaders,” NAR President John Smaby said. “At all levels of government, from city councils to county commissions to statehouses and to Congress, REALTORS® learned about the candidates and the issues that matter to them, got involved, and, most importantly, they voted.”
